Home Alarm Security Design 101

!±8± Home Alarm Security Design 101

Designing your home security system can be an important step in properly securing your home. Having been around the security system industry over the years, I've picked up on some key components for designing a lock tight home alarm system.

I'm currently building a home and the security design is an important component that I've included in the building process. Whether your building a new home, putting a security system in your existing home, doing a DIY alarm system or having it professionally installed, these are all important points to consider. It's important to maximize and optimize your security coverage.

1. Lock down the border of your home:

Doors - It goes without saying that the most common way that thieves enter your home is through a door. Back sliding glass doors can be a real target. The front door can be as well. A lot of people think that the front door is too visible but front doors continue to be a main entry point for intruders. Putting security contacts on each door is a must. Windows - In the basement and on the mainfloors, windows can also be a giant bullseye. Unlocked windows can be easy entry points. Security contacts on each window can be an additional barrier that you can add. This will allow the security system to sound an alarm if a window opens while your alarm is turned on... even if you forget to lock your windows. Another key way in monitoring your windows, is using glass breaks. Glass breaks can monitor any glass break sound for a particular area. So if an intruder decides to break the glass and bypass your window contacts, you'll still know.

2. Secure the inside:

Motion Sensors - Motion sensors can be an effective way to monitor activity inside the house. These sensors are designed with small pets and animals in mind. If an intruder can get past your first line of defense, a motion sensor can provide a strong secondary protection. Motion sensors are also perfect in unfinished basements. They are also a less expensive way to secure your unfinished basement vs. putting contacts on each window. Cameras - Video cameras are becoming an increasingly popular way of monitoring the inside of your home. The price has come down on security cameras making them more affordable. Cameras allow you to monitor activity while you're away or allow you to keep an eye on kids. Cameras can give you a view into your home at all times.

Lastly, as I mentioned earlier in this article, I'm building a new home. One way to save considerable amounts of money is to wire your new home with a security system in mind. Wired contacts are cheaper than wireless contacts. So, if you would like all of your windows and doors monitored, hard wiring the window security contacts is a great way to plan ahead and save some money. Wireless security contacts on windows and doors are still fantastic and will do a great job, they just will be a little more expensive.

Designing your home security alarm system is key to protecting you and your loved ones. Using these important tips can help you design the perfect alarm system.

Selecting a Home Standby Generator - A How-To Guide

!±8± Selecting a Home Standby Generator - A How-To Guide

How to Select a Home Standby Generator

Blizzards, Ice Storms, Tornadoes, Hurricanes, a careless driver striking a power pole -- there is no end to the natural and man-made disasters that can shut the power down at your home. In the past people would light some candles, fire up the gas stove, and tough it out. But now, with most homes being nearly 100% electric, losing power can be more than an inconvenience; it can be life-threatening.

Fortunately standby power generators, once exclusively used by factories and large companies, are within the financial reach of any home owner. They're safe, quiet, and efficient. In fact, the only issue is: Which generator is right for you?

What's the Watt?

Generators are sold by wattage rating. If you were absent from school on that day, you might not know that wattage is sort of the electrical equivalent to horsepower. Remember Ohm's law? Don't worry, I didn't either. Anyway, Watts = Volts x Amps and Amps = Watts/Volts. While theoretical knowledge is a wonderful thing, here's some more practical information to help you select the right home standby generator for you.

Power Consumption Calculations

Most every electrical appliance has a tag somewhere that will tell you at least two of the numbers that you need to calculate the right size emergency generator for you. If you have volts and amps, you can use Ohm's law to calculate the watts.

Of course, if they list the watts, then you're all set -- almost. Electrical motors require up to four times as much wattage to start up than they do to keep running. It's got something to do with inertia and friction, but I was absent on that day as well. So, a good rule of thumb is to multiply the wattage on the label (or the wattage that you calculated) by 4 if you're dealing with any electrical appliance that has a motor.

When it comes to calculating the wattage required to run electrical lighting, you could have been absent from school for the entire year and still get this one right. It's printed right there on top of the bulb. That means, if you want to power a 60 watt light bulb, then you'll consume... yep, 60 watts of power.

The following chart lists the average wattage for the average household appliances. Use these figures only as a guideline as your appliances may be extraordinarily un-average.

Typical Home Appliances Wattage Requirement Appliance

(multiply Watts x 4 to determine startup requirements for appliences with motors)

Coffee Maker 1750 0 Dishwasher (no heat) 700 (2800) 1400 Electric Fry Pan 1300 Electric Range 8-inch element 2100 Microwave Oven 625 watts Refrigerator or Freezer 700 (2800) Clothes Washer 1150 (4600) Electric Clothes Dryer 5750 (23,000) Furnace (gas or fuel oil) 1/8 Horsepower 300 (1200)
1/6 Horsepower 500 (2000)
1/4 Horsepower 600 (2400)
1/3 Horsepower 700 (2800)
1/2 Horsepower 875 (3500) Lights as printed on bulb Radio 50 to 200 0 Color Television 300 10,000 BTU Central Air Conditioner 1500

If you were planning to power everything listed above then, at first glance, you might think that you're going to need a 30,000 watt generator. Maybe buying a small nuclear reactor would make more sense. But wait! Look what happens when you apply a little power management logic to the formula.

Power Management 101

The first thing to remember is that the maximum wattage for anything motor-driven is only used when the motor first starts up. Moments later it drops down to the normal running wattage. So, you need to select a generator that outputs enough wattage to handle the appliance with the highest startup rating. Then, simply make sure no two appliances are started at the same moment and you can dramatically cut down your calculation.

The second thing to remember is that the total of the running wattage column is only an issue if you plan to run every appliance, all at the same time, and all day and night. So you see, by simply mapping out a reasonable power management schedule you can cut way back on the size of your power requirements. For most people a 2500 watt generator will do the trick.

Fuel Requirements

Although diesel-powered generators exist, they are typically used in commercial and industrial environments. For us homeowners there is a choice between gasoline and liquid propane gas (LPG). As a rule of thumb, the LPG models run quieter than the gasoline models. Fuel consumption varies depending upon the horsepower rating of the generator's engine. An 8 HP model will run about 10 hours +-, at full load, while an equivalent LPG model runs 1 hour for every 5 lbs of fuel that it burns.

Start Your Engines

There are 3 basic ways to fire up a generator. Some models come with a recoil starter, just like a lawn mower's starter, other come with an electric (battery) push-button starter, and other comes with an auto start switch, also called a transfer switch, that must be wired directly to your home's existing electrical system.

If you lose power frequently, or there is some device in your home that must remain powered on at all times for health or security reasons, then a transfer switch-equipped standby generator will virtually ensure that you have power even if you are not home when the outage occurs.

In Summary

Now that you have the basic facts, go ahead and make your own wattage consumption chart. Then devise your personal power management program, decide if you need a transfer switch or not, and go shopping for the peace of mind that an emergency generator will bring in times of trouble.

Propane Gas Safety Checklist for the Winter Season

!±8± Propane Gas Safety Checklist for the Winter Season

Winter storms can come unexpectedly, and are often severe enough to cause a major inconvenience for a homeowners heating system. Homeowners who use propane gas for heating their residences can exercise some common sense precautions before, during and after a winter storm to minimize any potential safety hazards to their property. Using this simple checklist will ensure you have considered all the important winter storm safety precautions and will provide a high level of security for both your property and, more importantly, your family.

Action items to take before a winter storm arrives:

Secure the safety of your propane tank by properly marking it with a colorful flag or neon painted poles or stakes. To increase the probability the flag or poles will be seen by snowplow operators, rescue vehicles, or service technicians, make sure that the poles are several feet higher than the average accumulated snow depths for your area of the country. Also mark underground tanks for ease of refilling.

Regularly check the tank to ensure you always have an adequate supply of propane. If a severe storm warning is forecast, immediately call your propane gas supplier and request that your tank be filled. Oftentimes after a winter storm, many streets or roads may not be plowed for several days making your home inaccessible for delivery.

Instruct family members on how and where to shut off the outdoor propane supply as well as all indoor propane appliances. Your propane supplier's service representative can assist you with this information.

Have written instructions so that any family member can easily turn off electricity, propane, and water sources. Additionally, Keep all operation manuals in an easy accessible place.

For extra safety, install a carbon monoxide detector on every level of your home. Carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding installation, location, and maintenance to ensure accurate results.

Propane gas detectors provide an extra and important measure of security. Install one or more propane gas detectors by carefully following the manufacturer's instructions regarding installation, location, and maintenance for optimum results.

Create an emergency preparedness plan and review it regularly with your family in order to keep them safe during a potential disaster.

Assemble an emergency preparedness kit that includes: Enough water to last for 5 to 7 days and provide at least one gallon of water per day for each person; Non-perishable canned or packaged foods to feed your family for 7 days; First Aid Kit; An adequate supply of medicines and prescription drugs; Pet needs; An extra supply of personal toiletries and hygiene Items; Flashlights and a supply of batteries; Cleaning supplies, trash bags and paper towels; Toys, books, games, a deck of cards, books, and a supply of paper and pens. Additionally, fully charge all cell phones (A satellite phone may be necessary as cell phones and land lines may be rendered inoperable). Action items to take during a winter storm: Be aware that snow and ice can create serious problems for your home's propane system by freezing and cracking pipes, regulators, valves, or other types of propane equipment. During the storm, regularly check all these items.

Action items to take during a winter storm:

Periodically clear away all snow and ice that has accumulated on and near your propane tank. Ii is important to note that pipes can freeze and crack causing leaking gas to pool in the snow which can become a potentially dangerous ignition source.

Clear snow and ice away from all outdoor vents, chimneys, and flues to reduce the potential for carbon monoxide poisoning. To prevent damage to any propane system component, always use a broom instead of a shovel.

Propane gas has a strong and unpleasant smell very similar to the smell of rotten eggs, a dead animal, or skunk's spray. Know this smell and shut off all propane sources.

Action items to take after a winter storm:

Methodically inspect your home, all structures, and the surrounding property. Immediately leave your premises if you have any concerns regarding your family's safety. Arrange to have your home inspected by a building inspector or carpenter before re-entering.

If it is dark, use only flashlights, not candles or any other source which could create a spark.

Carefully check your entire property for downed power lines. High winds or falling ice may have moved, shifted, or damaged gas lines and tanks. Immediately call your local utility company or propane supplier if any of these dangers exist.

Replenish your emergency preparedness kit in anticipation of another winter storm.

Following these precautions will ensure your family's safety. Although this article has focused primarily on propane gas, these are sensible procedures to follow regardless of your home's heating source. It is also important to discuss any other important precautions or any special needs with your propane gas supplier.
